Czeslaw,

I speak as a great-granfather who is an incurable optimist. As we age, I think two things happen to us that tend to encourage pessimism: 1) we get more insight into the range and scope of the world's ills and it tends to become overwhelming and 2) we experience more failures in trying to improve things.

Of course, we also experience more successes but on balance, for most of us I think there are more failures than successes in trying to save the world.

Youth (thank God!) are too ignorant to understand that saving the world is impossible so they just go ahead and do it. This, for me, is one of the greatest sources of optimism ... that the young don't have a clue about how hard it is to change the world for the better so they rush in where angels would fear to go.

I really believe optimism and pessimism are only partially rational and probably mostly not rational. When I rationally look at the world and try to assess the likelihood of the human race avoiding utter catastrophe within the next hundred years or so, I can find little RATIONAL cause for optimism. And yet I remain optimistic. Damned if I can justify that rationally. I have to invoke God or the Human Spirit or some such to justify my optimism but there you have it.

Eyes wide open and yet optimistic to the end!

Barry
