or 'from it', in this case 'it' = 'the fact that he was fostered by three
men called Fithecc", which was referred to in §11.

The copula does not have the sense 'that [there] were' (that would be the
substantive bá), rather, 'that he was'.

Here Fithecc is the name of each of Éogan's fosterers, so he was called
'Fithecc-rich Éogan' (= Eoghan of the [three] Fitheccs).
> som - emphasizing pronoun, suffixed to Fithicech = those,
'som' here emphasises the subject of the copula, which is 'he' (Éogan).

the poet said:".

In view of the definition of Fithecc given in DIL and of other comments I
believe the alternative meaning Fithecc = fort is equally valid to foster parent.
We have had: 'Tobretha trí dúne dó.' DIL has dún as an o stem neuter noun,
later s stem neuter, gs dúne. I think a rule regarding numbers is that trí is
inflected for case and gender with the plural of the noun. Trí dúne would then
be nominative plural, ie. three forts. Three forts were given (attributed) to him.
'Fithecc ainm cach aé.' Fithecc was the name of each (fort). Suppressed
copula preterite 3s.
'bói fāith cacha fithicce díib.' Bói here is the substantive verb, preterite 3s
rather than the copula. There was a seer in/at each fithecc of them, rather
than each fithecc was a seer.
