HEAnet are now in a position to power down the old Cisco GSR 12000 series
routers that made up the core of the old "rednet" network (L3 network)
since about 2002. These are being shutdown on a phased basis alongside the
decommissioning of other equipment in our various regional PoPs.
All client traffic was migrated onto the new Cisco CRS-1 based core
network at the end of 2008.
20090220 15:26 GM We plan to remove access to the core router in Cork
(cr1-cork.hea.net) at 1000 on Monday 23/02/2009. In the afternoon, the
equipment will be powered down by HEAnet staff on-site and prepared for
20090223 12:20 GM The Cork access router (cr1-cork.hea.net) has now been
removed from the live network. A number of services (such as DNS) shall be
cleaned up in the coming days, removing all references to the device.
20090313 16:23 GM The Limerick core router, cr1-lim.hea.net has been
scheduled for power down on the morning of Monday 23rd March. This will
have no customer impact.
20090327 11:45 GM - Access to the Galway core router (cr1-gal.hea.net)
will be removed on Tuesday morning between 10:00 and 12:00. All other
equipment in the Galway PoP has been previously decommissioned. No service
20090806 11:05 GM - Power down of cr1-cwt and cr1-kp scheduled for next
Wednesday morning (12/08/09). A HEAnet engineer will attend on-site in CWT
and KP PoPs to power down equipment.
20090811 11:48 GM - This afternoon we will shut interfaces between new
core routers (cr2-cwt/kp) and cr1-kp, including dropping ISIS and OSPF
adjacencies. cr1-kp will continue to be connected to the backbone via
20090812 08:16 GM - Commencing work to shut access to cr1-kp and cr1-cwt.
20090812 12:43 GM - The PoP switch in CWT (sw1-cwt) wasn't correctly
connected to the new network so removing access to cr1-cwt also broke
access to this device. This means cr1-kp has been removed but cr1-cwt
remains for the time being.
20090812 15:08 GM - Issues were observed with IPv6 routing due to the
static routes on the new core routers (cr2-cwt/kp). We removed the routes
from cr2-kp without issue, however cr2-cwt didn't drop the routes from the
routing table when the statics were removed. This is causing some minor
issues and has been escalated to LanComms.
ISIS was also configured between the core routers and the route reflectors
to redistribute the IPv6 routes to the core.
20090813 15:01 GM - We have migrated sw1-cwt to the new network, thus
removing the last dependence on the old network.
Turn off of cr1-cwt has now been scheduled for Tuesday 18/08/08 between
0800 and 1200
