Perhaps I would be seen as too "conservative" but I am afraid that verbal
considerations on conflicts (and on other social issues as well), may be
of limited validity due to their epistemological limitations. I usually
end up with reminding Wittgenstein.
I am not a blind believer in applying mathematical modelling everywhere
in social sciences but in the case of conflicts, it's always possible to
find some slightly more advanced game models based either on statistical
sources and/or simulation models.
Game models are applied in all the above cases - see, for example,
numerous papers in "Journal of Conflict Resolution" or
"Journal of Peace Research".
Since one-shot games would not be too relevant, perhaps only for a very
preliminary metaphorical description, the student should know a little
bit more about more advanced game models.
Perhaps some non-intuitive results could be also obtained?
Maybe she can find an additional heuristic inspiration in studying output
of some game models?
It's just an ad hoc suggestion so it could be further refined.
