I was wrong about the preposition.
I had a hunt through DIL. While I found a couple of instances in which
the preposition appears to to be 'do' ('towards'; cf 2 Bertaid) the
entries under 'forgab' and 'gora' suggests that a spear was looked on in
much the same way as any other bladed weapon: something you inflicted
blows "on" someone with. So 'fair' presents no problems.
