Killing an animal is definitely a way to pacify it. The high priest in Babylon threw a dead goat into the Euphrates river, and the butcher chucked in the head, each New Year, to purefy the waters. Obviously the water became purer as the goat drifted away downstream. The sculpted Celt warrior from 3rd cent BC found near Rome, wore only a belt and goat-horns, so he died healthy.
