Instead of an ethnic group it could be a descriptor of this one man. This seems like a long shot, but is it possible the ecen = ecnaid? "Wise Man of the Wood".
Has anyone read ahead enough to know if the man in question is the titular Cu/ Roi/?

There is certainly no recogised population group in Ireland that I'm aware of (from a
list of c.2,700) with a name anything like this. If it is the name of a group rather
than just a description of some sort, they sure aren't from Ireland from what I can see
