Through the discussions we had with Dave Beatty about
intergenerational transfers, with Jan en Fred about Orthodoxy, with
the organizing committee about embedding the next Metaphorum meeting
in a syntegration, and through the inspiring guidance of Katherine
through Sankt Gallen, I propose herewith to name Vadian of Sankt
Gallen as patron Saint of the Metaphorum group.
For those who didn't hear about Vadian, first a short summary:
Vadian was the leader of the Reformation in Sankt Gallen and was thus
also involved in the iconoclastic activities against the catholic
images in the city. But, at the same time, he protected personally
the richesses of the library of the benedictine monastery of Sankt
Gallen, storing the precious books in his own home.
Regarding the Stafford Beer legacy, I think that the Metaphorum group
needs also to take up the paradoxical role that Vadian played in the
Sankt Gallen reformation. At one hand continue the iconoclastic work
of all images which are created to furnish a Stafford Beer mausoleum,
at the other hand to keep rigorously the writings of Stafford and to
stimulate as many as possible to continuously re-interpret or re-
actualize those writings by using them as generative texts.
Metaphorum as the reformator or better re-creator of the Staffordian
tradition, so that it stays alive.
As a worthwhile illustration of what I mean I can refer to the rich
discussion of the second-order cybernetics we had as workshop.
Looking at the future. Why not start to experiment with the
syntegration protocol, why not take the risk to tinker with it's
constraints preparing the next Metaphorum conference. Instead of
trying to squeeze a syntegration into a too short time frame, why not
experiment with the Listserv, with the Metaphorum website and the
other means that we have to try to design a virtual-real syntegration
and to experiment with the boundary between virtuality and reality?
If some of you are interested to explore this and to design the next
conference in accordance, I would like to jcontribute.
Kind regards to everyone,
