I have both Susatos and prefer the VSB model. To my ear, the VSB has
more of a traditional whistle tone. Plus, the SB model is just too
damn loud to play in the house.
I don't own a Sindt, the ones I've heard are great, but I believe the
maker has quite a long waiting list. Also, it's said that you have to
half-hole the C natural; if you're used to cross-fingering I imagine
that could be a pain to switch.
An aluminum whistle in the sub-$50 range to check out is the "Syn,"
from a maker in Australia, Earle Bartlett. I have one from an early
production batch. The holes were a bit crudely cut, but I liked it a
lot, and I think the newer ones are supposed to be better (with
