Your account certainly jibes with my recollection, Peter. I remember back in
1999 exiting Ebisu station in Tokyo and seeing a fair-haired fellow
energetically busking on some stringed instrument (it may even have been a samisen,
come to think of it). In spite of the fact that it was rush hour, no one
streaming past seemed to take the slightest interest.
As for the Shannons (in the Osaki neighborhood?) I remember it seating about
15 people if they stood shoulder to shoulder-- Guinness was 900 yen a pint;
God knows what it might be now...
