Ticket Number: HEA-NOC/20061203-2 Ticket Status: UPDATE
Ticket Type: unscheduled Resolver: GEANT
Ticket Opened: 20061203 11:25 UTC Problem Start: 20061203 01:00 UTC
Ticket Update: 20061220 15:12 UTC Problem End:

Site/line: GEANT

Problem Description:
cr1-cwt is not receiving routes from GEANT router.

Problem Effects:
Traffic to and from GEANT is rerouting via JANET and Global crossing links.

Problem History:
20061203 10:41 Phoned GEANT Noc. The two Global Crossing links to the GEANT
router in Dublin are both down at the moment. The link Dublin to London is
down since Friday and will not start until the 7/8th of December. the
Frankfurt-Dublin link went down at 1am today.

20061204 09:53 AH Géant2 earliest time to fix is Wednesday and this is
weather-dependent as both breaks are undersea. Connectivity to Géant2 is
currently assymetric via JANET and Global Crossing. Géant2, JANET and
HEAnet are working to co-operate and deliver symmetric performance.

20061204 11:23 AH IPv4 routing to Géant2 connected sites is now symmetric
via JANET. Géant2 have also revised the time to fix on to be sooner on one
of the onbound links due to review noting that one of the breaks is on dry
land.

20061204 17:16 BB

20061205 11:38 AH Géant2 report that maintenance to repair the London link
will start on 11/12/2006 and will last 3 days. Maintenance on the Frankfurt
link is more problematic - current estimate is that it could be six weeks
plus before the system is repaired and the operation will be extremely
weather sensitive. Traffic continues to reroute via JANET but this is a
reduced, shared capacity.

20061208 19:59 BN Géant2 have reported that there may be a reroute
possible on the Frankfurt link that will bring it back into service by
Wednesday 13th December. Traffic continues to reroute via JANET.

20061212 09:11 AH Adverse weather conditions have delayed the start of
work on the London link by at least a day.

20061213 14:21 JH Global crossing are working on the re-routing of the
circuit at the moment and hope to have the circuit up by the end of the
day.

20061214 09:07 JH The last update Greant received from Global Crossing is
as follows;

According to Global Crossing the weather is getting better, so they should
start the reparation tomorrow morning (Thurs 14th).
On Friday 15th they plan to survey and remove the old cable.
On Saturday 16th they will landing (installing) the new cable and joining
it to the existing system.
Global Crossing they should be able to put the traffic back on Monday.
However as all those operations are weather-dependent the given schedule
might be delayed.

20061215 11:11 BN While Global Crossing are working on this link, Geant
have asked for some testing to be performed on the local end in the HEAnet
Citywest PoP. Cable has been reseated, but further circuit testing may be
required.

20061215 12:52 BN GN2 NOC report that the IE-DE link to Frankfurt is now
back up. Traffic has begun to flow over this link once more, but
monitoring will continue. The backup routing via JANET is still in place
in case of further failure.

20061219 09:39 CS No update on the IE-UK link yet. Final Problem Report
for IE-DE link was received:

Hardware Failure IE GN2 Router / After the re-routing of the circuit
DE-IE the connection to the Dublin router is back to normal / Global
Crossing reference: 1016329

20061220 15:09 CS Update on IE-UK link:

Cable & Wireless had problems with bad weather on 16th December and had to
stop the repair. Cable & Wireless has postponed the repair of the cable
until between the 10th and 17th January 2007. New Cable & Wireless ticket
202611818.

Time to Fix:
IE-UK: Unknown.

IE-DE: 12.5 days
