Following research within HEAnet and in the wider networking community it
has been decided to remove the route flap damping configuration from the
eBGP speaking routers in Citywest. This effectively means that there will
be no flap damping done on any peerings to HEAnet.
Testing indicated that the network could cope with any route flapping and
that it is possible routing into and out of HEAnet may improve as BGP is
allowed to work as designed. The work itself should not cause any
noticeable disruption, but there way be a slight interruption to some BGP
peerings, however all traffic will reroute. A one hour window has been
given for this work but any actual disruption will be far shorter than
20051118 11:18 BN Planned work, identified that flap damping is only
configured on Hyperion and Deimos, two GSRs in the Citywest PoP.
20051123 08:19 BN Work completed without disruption. Flap damping is no
longer enabled on any eBGP speaking router. This will be monitored for
20051124 13:22 BN No adverse effects, or any of any kind, have been
noticed. Ticket being closed.
