I am interested in communicating with individuals and projects involved in
software localization/translation to African languages in (and for) Africa,
particularly by free/open-source software projects and small proprietary
I have sent similar requests out in the past and from replies to those, as well
as from various other contacts and news releases, have developed a pretty good
idea of the main players in South Africa, Nigeria, and Eastern Africa, along
with as some efforts elsewhere on and off the continent. But this information
is certainly not complete and the field is changing constantly.
I take this topic broadly, including software applications (office suites,
browsers, wordprocessors, locales, etc.), specialized subareas like keyboard
layouts, machine translation, text-speech transformations, font development,
etc. It is also always of interest to know of other projects, such as online
dictionaries, language learning programs, content development initiatives.
This information will be used in research I am undertaking on African language
localization and in perhaps adding to a list of invitees to a (FOSS)
localization workshop currently in the late planning stages. More info on the
latter is forthcoming.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
