Trained and applied judgment. Similarly for craftsmanship.
I'm reminded of T.H. Huxley's definition of science:
Science is nothing but trained and organised
common sense, differing from the latter only
as a veteran may differ from a raw recruit.
I'm not a trained designer and sometimes I'll look at a design, realise
that it is wrong and has failed in its purpose, but not have the slightest
idea on how to put it right.
