I was wondering if the patronym "Mac Dear-bháil" might contain the
element "Bel". Could "Dear-bal" possibly translate as "daughter of Bel"
or "priestess of Bel"? This name is from a poem in the Book of the Dean of
Lismore by MacGilloa Fhionntog, in a descripton of the house of MacGregor.
"MacGriogóir bos bharrchorcra,
mac Dear-bháil buide ó Ghallaibh,
aonchara na calmachta,
lámh lér ráinig gach rathbhuaidh."
"MacGregor whose palms are rosey-tipped,
son of Derval from the Lowland,
peerless friend of bravery,
a hand wherewith is come each gracious excellence."
Best wishes for Beltaine! Beannachtaí an lae, na míosa,
agus na ráithe atá ag tosú oraibh go léir!
