equal place-holders, sure. but, how did you arrive at the conclusion that
the 1 should be flanked by unnecessary white space? as mentioned earlier,
tabular settings (I prefer the term "tabular figures", btw) require equal
spacing for the sake of the table. non-tabular settings (i.e. text),
however, suffer from the spacing anomalies created by mono-width figures
combined with proportional characters.
I'm shooting for a dictatorial edict, here, not a zealous statement. ; )
