Any tracking breaks readability. The typical 70s ad style, with a
hairthin weight of Univers (or worse: Avant-Garde) set without space at
all between adjacent vertical strokes, maybe made some kind of efficient
connected boumas which resembled anything but readable words!
Another more contemporary typical garbage is the newspapers using loose
tracking parameters in XPress, going from negative to positive
letterspacing each other line, which make me sick and totally break any
possible rhythm of reading. A side-effect that you could like to comment
on is that it somehow preserves bouma-caching, as the only actual
expectation you have as a reader is that the next occurrence of a given
word will most likely have a different aspect than the one you're
currently memorizing hopelessly...
