Something similar happens when I read newspaper headlines: misreadings
and juxtapositions will give humorous results (unfortunately, I don't
write them down, and can't remember any now). I suspect that an
important part of reading is prediction--what do I expect it to say.
I've had similar issues with highway signs. At a distance, I'll be sure
I know what the sign says, but as I get closer, it resolves into
something altogether different.
