Top Staff Purge at Africa Online
London-based African Lakes Corporation has announced a major
purge in the top ranks of its transcontinental subsidiary,
Africa Online. Those leaving include CEO Kamande Muiruri and
general manager Kenya James Ochola. Senior officials in the
interim report directly to group chief operating officer.
Kamande Muiruri, whose position has been left vacant,
was appointed in March this year. He replaced the firm's
founder, Ayisi Makatiani, who had been appointed group
strategy director in July last year. Mr Makatiani has since
left the company. Others shown the door are editor-in-chief
AfricaOnline.com Ben Parker and head of technical services
John Njuguna Kamau, replaced by a Mr George Ezzat.
The group at the same time released Mr Mike Ralston,
vice-president (Group Business Department), who assumed
the joint position early this year, and assistant group
financial controller Katie Thompson. In the meantime, Fred
Murunga is the new director of Africa Online Kenya. Before
his current appointment, he was the chief finance officer
of MenaNet, the second largest ISP in Egypt, which he helped
build. It was acquired by Africa Online in March last year.
"His appointment is expected to strengthen the important
tie between the group's North African and sub-Saharan Africa
ISP businesses; the two businesses being at the core of
the group's strategy," said African Lakes. It said the
restructuring was targeting central office costs in Nairobi
and London in addition to parts of business that do not
contribute positively to its cash flow. Group communications
manager Gunnar Hillgartner said the move would save over
$700,000 (Sh55m) annually.
