The American Society of Plant Taxonomists has awarded Corresponding
Membership to Hugh Bryan Spencer Womersley, Professor emeritus of the University of
Adelaide. Professor Womersley was cited for his sustained productivity and
adherence to the highest standards of scholarship in his research on the
marine algae of southern Australia. His monographs have served as indispensable
sources of information for phycologists everywhere. His contribution to our
knowledge of the morphology, taxonomy, and ecology of marine algae is
exceeded in importance only by his enormous influence as a teacher: he has mentored
several phycologists who in turn have been productive in research and
effective in teaching. The honor bestowed on Professor Womersley by a society dominated
by spermatophyte specialists is acknowledgment that phycologists also play an
important role in taxonomy.

The timing of the award is fortunate, since 2002 is the year in which
Professor Womersley will celebrate his 80th birthday (November 19) and in
which the final part of his monumental "The marine benthic flora of southern
Australia" will be published (Part IIID, Rhodomelaceae, to be issued as a
supplementary volume to "Flora of Australia").
