To be finnicky about it, I suppose the OIr. would have been Óengus as well
as (unattested) Mac ind Oac, cf. O'Rahilly in Early Irish History and
Mythology who suggests an original *Macon + "young", with *Macon <
*makkwonos almost = Welsh Mabon, Gaul. Maponos < *makwonos, later reshaped
after the article but without changing "young" into a "proper" genitive
accordingly, cf. O'Rahilly's Middle Irish rhyming evidence for neutral -c
in óc.
