It sounds like you need to start by reading the very large amout of good
info that comes with the product on the CD.
When you understand how SPS publishes information, your biggest
challenge will be securing the Sharepoint server outside your firewall.

We are using Microsoft's Sharepoit Portal Server.
I am very new to sharepoint. I understand that Sharepoint is used for
document management. It can publish and mainly work in intranet
environment. I got some info that it can work in extranet (can publish
the documents from intranet to internet).
My main objective is to publish the documents on internet from intranet
First of all whether this is possible ? if yes, How to do this ? For
this purpose whether XML can act as a middle wear ? Or which is the best
suitable middlewera ? As per as possible I do not want to use ASP as I
have another third party softwares which do not support ASP.
Thanks in advance
