Some years ago I saw a set of Bohemian pipes which had a small screw mounted
at the side of each hole on the chanter allowing the player to alter the
hole size of each note by turning the screw and putting more or less of the
end across the hole. I believe Andreas Rogge and some others use this idea
on the back Ds of their chanters. There is no reason why such a system
couldn't be built into regulators.
The thing would be to get the head of the screw large enough to be easily
and quickly manipulated by the fingers.
