And the story I heard originally, from a Highland piper or maybe some liner notes, was that G.S. McLennan was pissed as a newt when he came up with the tune and couldn't make it work the way he wanted, hence the slurs. On the other hand, he also wrote "The Little Cascade", which is such a great tune that he should be forgiven one night of excess.
