I've travelled all three Ridings round
And once I went to sea
From forges, mills and sailing ships
Good Lord deliver me
--"The Dalesman's Litany"
The 'Riding' term presumably being taken from the former North, West
and East Ridings of Yorkshire, England. Unfortunately the people who
divided Tipperary seem not to have known that 'riding' is derived
from 'thriding', from Old English 'thrithing, from Old Norse thrithi,
meaning a third.
