Motion Picture Access (MoPix) News:

This week there are five films playing with closed captions and descriptions in equipped theaters in the U.S. and Canada. A record number of accessible films at one time, and a true sign of progress for movie fans out there who prefer to experience movies with these access features. Several of the films now playing are contenders for film industry awards, another major first.

The Tampa Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI), has had a Rear Window Captioning and DVS Theatrical installation in its Dome IMAX theater for many months. Walt Disney's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST has been reissued by Buena Vista Pictures exclusively in giant screen theaters for its tenth anniversary, and will play in the MOSI Dome IMAX with closed captions and descriptions for the duration of its run. The MOSI IMAX has had an extensive outreach campaign since RWC and DVST debuted, which ensures many loyal description and caption fans, their friends and families. We're grateful to the theater staff and to the folks at Buena Vista for sharing this much-loved film with all audiences in the Tampa area. This theater has been added to the list of locations below.

A BIG THANKS to the parents, kids, teachers and just plain, average movie fans out there for taking a moment to share your thoughts about enjoying access to first-run feature films. The text of your messages has been passed along, and will continue to be passed along to theater chains and movie studios. Keep it coming!

The number one question we are asked: What can I do to get closed captioned and described films closer to my home? We assembled a list of headquarters of major theater chains-- let them know you're eager to see accessible films, eat their popcorn and be a regular customer. The link to the list of chains is http://ncam.wgbh.org/mopix/chains.html.

More News... NEW THEATERS, NEW CHAINS!

National Amusements will install Rear Window Captioning and DVS Theatrical in its new theater complex in Los Angeles-- The Bridge (located in the vicinity of the LA Airport). The complex's IMAX Theater will be the auditorium equipped with closed captioning and description systems (first-run as well as IMAX films *can* play in these large format theaters). A late January installation is planned. Welcome National Amusements!

Famous Players, Canada's largest theater chain, has installed Rear Window Captioning and DVS Theatrical systems in five theaters across Ontario, the first installations of these systems outside the U.S. Based on the great response from captioning and description fans, Famous Players is planning more than 30 additional installations across Canada. See current location information below, and link to www.famousplayers.com, then click on their navigation bar to RWC/DVST for a list of films, locations and showtimes during the week between when these updates come to you.

The Loews Theatre Metreon in downtown San Francisco will soon have the first Rear Window Captioning and DVS Theatrical installation in Northern California. We've heard for years from consumers in the area, and are so pleased to share this good news. The installation date for the access systems is still targeted for end of this month (January).

Mann's Hollywood & Highland (now under construction) will install Rear Window Captioning and DVS Theatrical systems in two of the complex's theaters. This theatre is in Los Angeles, next to the new Kodak Academy Theatre (site of future Academy Awards ceremonies).

Currently available with closed captions using the Rear Window Captioning system, and audio descriptions utilizing the DVS Theatrical System:
