If you want to know what women could/couldn't do before
christianity look into Brehon Law. You may also find a
law tract Cain Admomnain (not sure I spelled it right).
I've never read it in its original only as paraphrased
excerpts but it does emphasize a change in laws in
regard to women. They become "protected". They can't
be put to death for crimes but they also no longer have
equal standing. They are viewed as weaker.
