The main problem you'll encounter (especially
with Fontographer) is that fonts which contain
fancy hinting will lose all that good stuff upon
being re-exported, so they'll look crappy on-screen.

For personal use, the only font house that prohibits any
modification in the absolute is Microsoft. As much as I
admire MS's font products, since I consider that sort of
prohibition to be unethical, I actually try to encourage
people to violate it. But *only* for personal use.
