The journalism professor in me, which has been deeply ingrained in my
psyche since 1981, has to followup on the note about newspapers listing
editors, etc.
Yes, indeed, U.S. newspapers all do it. I also have never come across one
that doesn't. Usually this little block of info is found on the
newspaper's editorial page, listing publisher, editor and some other folks
generally responsible for the publication, and thus by extension, the
content, of the newspaper, be that content news or advertising. The little
block, or box, is called the masthead.
You will hear some American journalists use masthead as the name for the
device on a newspaper's front page that gives the name of the newspaper
(e.g. The New York Times). They are incorrect. That device is called the
flag, or, less colorfully, the nameplate. Anyone calling that device the
masthead should be strung up on a flagpole and left to dangle for an
indefinite period.
Cheers, Jay
