I don't think either French Paper or Josh Darden copied the other one's
face (as for French, didn't they comission a bunch of different people to
do those fonts? I remember reading something about that. Or maybe it was
the Charles S. Anderson folks who did them or got other people to do
them?). The basic model that both fonts are based on is well-known and can
be seen in lots of different faces from various sources.
A book like Rob Roy Kelly's _American Wood Type: 1828-1900_ has a bunch of
examples. But these characteristics weren't only seen in wood types, and
they weren't only American/British. For example you can see stuff in old
Enschede specimens (in small sizes) that looks like the two faces in question.
