The big picture for getting data between an XML document and a
relational database is pretty simple -- just get a product that does
this and use it. (Some of the details are not so simple, but you asked
for the big picture :)
If you don't want to be locked into a particular database, there are
numerous middleware packages that support transferring data between XML
documents and the database. For a fairly complete/up-to-date list, see:
I'm not sure if any of these support XML query languages such as XPath.
You'll need to check the Web sites for each.
By the way, if you're using VB, then at least ADO will work for you.
