Yes, there are a lot of simple ways - it depends on where your skill lie. Three
very different approaches would be:
a) use Perl or OmniMark to do pattern matching and convert it directly,
b) load the file into a database using the | as a delimiter, then export it
c) write an SGML DTD with short references, allowing the parser to regard
the | in context.
I'm sure there are numerous other "simple" ways, but you get the idea...
