I have a dislike of some instruments if badly played. I can tolerate bad
fiddle playing (strangely enough), whistle, flute - but I can't abide bad
guitar backup or bad drumming There is no more annoying noise than someone
strummng merrily along with no thought to the tune (while someone else
thumps away mindlessly in the background). I always say I hate banjo, only
because I have been in sessions with too many banjos, but really a
tastefully played banjo is a wonderful thing. Same with octave
mandolin, mando cello/bouzouki family of instruments - if well played, I like
it. If overdone, my nerves start to fray. In short, the band from hell
(bouzouki, bodhran, banjo, button box) can either send you into raptures, or
screaming from the pub.
I like them all if done right.
