I think this may be a result of misinterpreting comments about
Pernicious Mixed Content to apply to all mixed content. Some
systems (eg EuroMath) go to extreme lengths to avoid mixed
content at all. I don't have their DTD right here, but it's
the equivalent of something like
<text>This is normal text and</text>
<ital>this is italicised</ital>
<text>and this is back to normal.</text>
As Wendell said, for people handling traditional text documents,
mixed content is probably critical. For people using e-business
type XML, where elements are treated more like database fields,
it's probably a non-issue.
