We're not sure--we switched back and forth between whatever came with the Sun JDK 1.2 and Apache/Tomcat. The problem was resolved when we switched to a different server on which we had unthinkingly installed JDK 1.3, so we'll stick with that, but it's still a curious set of problems and yes, what =does= one do if there isn't a DTD--how do you tell the parser to preserve space?
