Easiest thing at this point is probably to write your own extension function
Look up the msxsl:script element on the MSDN library for info on how. Some
other XSLT processors also support creating your own functions, but they all
differ in their implementations, so be warned that any XSLT stylesheets with
extension functions may need some rewriting to port them to different

Subject: Changing numbers
We have a number in in a <PUBLICATIONDATE>20010724</PUBLICATIONDATE>. But
we only want to display the first four digits, 2001. I Looked at the
xsl:number and the format-number function but I failed. Any thoughts, or
directions to where I can do some more reading would be greatly appreciated.
I've exhausted the microsoft library and the w3c.
