SOFT ALGAE ANALYST POSITION AVAILABLE

The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia


Issue Date: March 1, 2001

The Patrick Center for Environmental Research at The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia has an immediate opening for a temporary, full-time Soft Algae Analyst. Primary responsibilities will include identification and enumeration of soft algae in samples collected as part of an intensive study of algal growth throughout portions of the Jackson River in western Virginia.

DUTIES:  The primary responsibility will be analysis of soft algae samples.  Detailed identification of all taxa is not required; accurate enumeration of the moderately and very common taxa is required.  The position requires close and effective communication with Academy project team members and administrators, as well as fulfilling Quality Assurance /Quality Control requirements and keeping well organized and detailed records.

QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelors or Masters degree in a field closely related to Aquatic Biology is preferred, but not necessary.  Some experience analyzing soft algae samples is required. A strong interest and background in soft algae taxonomy and ecology, particularly current concepts and literature is desirable, but not necessary. Organizational skill and attention to detail are important components of this position.

Familiarity with IBM compatible personal computers and software, particularly word processing (Word/Word Perfect), spreadsheets, databases and Internet communication are important.

Position is contingent on funding. Anticipated funding is available for at least six months.

Salary is commensurate with experience.

Start date:  Position available April 1.   The Academy of Natural Sciences offers a competitive benefits package.
