You may leave the list at any time by following these steps:
(1) Create a new e-mail message. (DO NOT REPLY TO A MESSAGE POSTED
(2) In the To: portion of the message, enter:
[log in to unmask]
(3) The message subject doesn't matter.
(4) The message body must contain the following single line:
(5) Send the message.

The "TO:" address shown a few lines above is NOT the address of the mailing
list itself. If you:
(a) send a message to the mailing list itself, or
(b) reply to a message on the mailing list and change the
subject and/or the message body to "unsubscribe" (or
"signoff xml-l," or etc.),
you will NOT be unsubscribed. Subscribe/Unsubscribe requests are handled by
an automated process which does not read messages to the list itself; it
only reads and responds to messages sent to [log in to unmask]

Within a few minutes of sending the above message to the above address, you
will receive an automated reply which says:
You have been removed from the XML-L list.
From this point on, until (unless) you re-subscribe, you will receive no
further messages from XML-L.
When you first subscribed to XML-L, you were automatically mailed a welcome
message (subject: "You are now subscribed to the XML-L list"). The welcome
message contained much useful information about using XML-L's automated
features. The above instructions for unsubscribing from the XML-L mailing
list are adapted from that welcome message.
The XML-L archives, and a Web-based subscription management interface, are
[not the list admin, just an interested party]
