The code snippet below is part of a template that creates an HTML page for
each topic element in our xml source. Each topic in the source has a unique
id that is assigned to the head (for reasons not relevant to this example).
So an HTML attribute is written dynamically based on an attribute defined in
the source, which I think is what you're asking for. There is also an
<xsl:attribute> that may be useful in this regard, but the method below has
worked for us.
<TITLE><xsl:value-of select = 'heading'/></TITLE>
<XSL.../> <xsl:call-template name="linkhelpstuff"/>
