Phytoplankton Ecologist Research Scientist

CSIRO Marine Research

AUD $74K to $84K pa + Superannuation

The Coastal Waters Program in CSIRO Marine Research undertakes research to
support improved management and sustainable utilisation of Australia's
coastal marine ecosystems. Current research issues include impacts of urban
and rural runoff, environmental impacts and sustainable development of
aquaculture, eutrophication, harmful algal blooms, and impacts of
introduced marine pests. The Program seeks to achieve significant advances
in our knowledge and understanding of coastal marine ecosystems, and
deliver solutions to both industry and
regulatory agencies, by adopting an inter-disciplinary approach, combining
cost-effective modern approaches to monitoring and field measurement with
laboratory and field process studies and modelling.

The Program is seeking to recruit a senior experienced phytoplankton
ecologist to work within the Environmental Biogeochemistry subprogram. The
subprogram conducts laboratory and field research dealing with the cycling
and impacts of nutrients, sediments and toxicants discharged
into estuaries and coastal waters. The successful applicant will work as
part of a research team including expertise in nutrient chemistry, natural
isotopes and lipid biomarkers, and will work with an experienced
environmental modelling group to improve models of phytoplankton
ecophysiology and biogeochemistry. He/she will have access to a
well-equipped phytoplankton laboratory, and to support staff with expertise
in nutrients, phytoplankton pigments, phytoplankton taxonomy and
