I have just come from a presentation delivered by Mark Harris, Director
of Operations for IBM South Africa.
A key point of his address was the importance of lowering the cost of IT
equipment (thereby increasing access) and improving the relevancy of
information being made available for educational institutions and
communities connected via telecentres, etc.
He mentioned initiatives by IBM to make equipment that is cheaper and
more accessible to the average person. This project is taking place in
South America. Has anyone come across this project? In your opinion, is
Secondly, he commented that Sony is also developing cheap products with
the ability to access the Internet. Harris did not elaborate on what
these are exactly. Any ideas?
