PhD Research Studentship
Biodiversity of selected groups of phytoplankton of inland waters in Kenya
Applicants are invited for a PhD Research Studentship available from
November 1st 2000 for a project on phytoplankton biodiversity of standing
inland waters of Kenya, East Africa.
The project is funded by the Ministry of Science & Technology of Germany
The position is available for three years according to the salary level of
The working place is the Department of Limnology of Stratified Lakes,
D-16775 Stechlin -Neuglobsow, Germany (two hours north of Berlin). This
department is well equipped as field station of the Institute of Freshwater
Ecology & Inland Fisheries Berlin.
The PhD student has the possibility to take part at four scientific
expeditions (every expedition for 4 weeks) to Kenyan inland waters.
The aims of the project are:
i) selection and characterization of several "model waters" which are
representing ecosystems of different interesting phytoplankton
biodiversity, trophic state and human use,
ii) detailed inventory of the species stock of phytoplankton groups with
high ecosystemare relevance and conclusions concerning their functional
role in these waters with focus on cyanobacteria and green algae (further
groups are possible depending on the interests and experience of the
iii) contribution to evaluation and management of water resources as well
as education and training of specialists in the field of phytoplankton work
The project is organized in co-operation with the Botany Department of the
Kenyatta University Nairobi.
Field, laboratory and computer skills are required.
The project will involve the use of a wide range of limnological and
phycological techniques, e.g. physico-chemical analysis of lake-water,
phytoplankton sampling and preparation, determination of phytoplankton
fresh mass, isolation of unialgal cultures, maintenance of
laboratory-cultured organisms, phytoplankton commmunity composition,
biodiversity and systematics, light microscopy, electron microscopy,
molecular biology, statistical analysis of data.
The willingness to occasionally work in the field under adverse
environmental conditions, and with non-standard hours, is required.
Applicants should hold a first or upper second class honours degree in a
relevant life sciences discipline or an M.Sc. or Diploma degree.
Applications, including CV, and the names and e-mail address of two
academic referees, should be made to
