I suspect his heritage was Germanic. Eisenhower was probably an
anglicized form of something else. Is there a German surname Eisenhauer?

For what it's worth, more than 50% of U.S. citizens claim at least partial
German or Germanic (Swiss or Austrian) ancestry.
