The exact history is a matter of some debate, but a few things I
picked up, which at least don't contradict each other:

The first appearance was in 1896, condensed medium and bold only,
followed 1898 by a regular weight. Later on, many different
weights have been developed, the currently available ones
        largely by G.G.Lange for Berthold.

The original cut came from Vienna, Witwe Poepplbaum Schriftgiesserei,
according to one source (Source: Erik Spiekermann in Typo-L)
G.G. Lange suggests that the roots for at least the normal weight
might have been in Stuttgart, at Bauer & Co. (Source: Manfred
        Klein in: ``Typen und Typografen´´).
Berthold then acquired the and developed the typeface, around the
        turn of the century.

Sorry I can't back this up with any references professors would
like, the wisdom comes from Typo-L and books I don't have at
        hand.

                Regards, Gerhard
