Indeed, we do use that saying, too, Alun, though I know nothing
about its origin.
But I prefer not to put my glasses into hock because they look
lovely when the light strikes their facets, they ring so sweetly when struck
gently with a finger, they are a bit of Ireland in my American home, and the
soul and eye need to drink beauty as much as the body needs liquid
Besides, I'm flush enough to buy drinkables without hocking my
