                   Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia

Issue Date: Ferbuary 28, 2000       Closing Date: March 15, but open until filled

The Patrick Center for Environmental Research at The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia has an immediate full-time opening for a knowledgeable, energetic, well-organized Aquatic Ecologist . The successful candidate will lead monthly sampling trips (one week per month; April through December, 2000) to the Jackson River in Virginia to assess algal growth and related factors, and to collect algae and measure biomass of samples. Duties include, but are not limited to, preparing for and leading monthly field sampling, interacting with project sponsors on-site, performing chlorophyl a and ash-free dry mass analyses, managing project database, performing various data analyses, preparing monthly and final reports, and coordinating project tasks with other team members.  A goal of this research is to characterize patterns of algal growth dynamics in the river and to study how they are influenced by hydrologic and biological factors.

Qualifications: The Aquatic Ecologist must be able to function effectively in the field and lab as a key member of a research team, and be able to analyze, synthesize and report study results. The specific qualifications are:

        - MS in aquatic ecology or a related field and a minimum of five years experience
        - Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to learn quickly
        - Ability to work independently with minimal supervision        - Good driving record
        - IBM PC  skills including Windows 95, Word Perfect, Excel, Access, e-mail
        - Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
        - Ability to work with large databases and perform complex statistical analyses

Desirable Attributes :

        - Familiarity with chlorophyl a extraction and ash-free dry weight analyses.
        - Familiarity with sampling algae and measuring physical characteristics of streams
        - Willingness to function cooperatively and flexibly as part of a team effort.
        - Experienced photographer, including underwater photography

The Context:  The Academy is a private nonprofit research center and museum of natural history operating since 1812, whose mission is to expand knowledge of nature through discovery and to inspire stewardship of the environment. The Patrick Center, founded in 1947, is a recognized leader in basic ecological research to produce knowledge of aquatic ecosystems and their watersheds and to apply this knowledge to solve problems of societal importance. The Patrick Center has 40 staff members and an annual budget of about $3M.

This position will be funded for one year.  An extension is possible, but not guaranteed.
