DIATOM TAXONOMIST/ECOLOGIST POSITION AVAILABLE
Centre de Recherche Public - Gabriel Lippmann (Luxembourg)

The Unit of environmental research and biotechnologies of the Public
Research Center-Gabriel Lippmann in Luxembourg has an opening for a
full-time Diatomist (24 months, diatom taxonomist/periphyton ecologist).

DUTIES: Responsibilities will include collection of samples, chemical
treatments of samples and permanent slide mounting, identification and
enumeration of diatoms from permanent slides of periphytic samples
collected from rivers and streams of Luxembourg and France or other
European countries. On average, about 50% of time will be devoted to
enumeration and taxonomy of diatoms, and 50% on related tasks, including
cultures, data analysis, and writing reports and scientific papers.

QUALIFICATIONS: A Master degree in aquatic botany/biology and/or in
environmental sciences  is preferred and at least 2 years of experience in
collecting and analyzing periphyton samples. Experience analyzing diatom
samples of rivers and a strong interest and background in diatom taxonomy
is necessary.  Familiarity with the use of diatoms and algae in rivers as
water quality indicators is desirable.
Familiarity with IBM compatible personal computers and software,
particularly word processing, database management, diatom software
(OMNIDIA), spreadsheets is important. Experience with water quality sample
analysis, digital image acquisition, manipulation and use of SEM (or TEM),
and statistics analysis is favorable.

Good knowledge in French, English and German is desirable.

Salary will be dependent upon experience
Duration: 24 months
Starting:  Position available March/April, 2000.
