        Hi Kelly,

        No matter what program you'll be working with, it will always
        help to have a look at the general outline before. Two of my
        favourites sites for introductions:

        Sites:
   -----
        * Fontsite (www.fontsite.com), including a a tutorial on the dos
        and dont's of typesetting, with a slight emphasis on web
        typography.

        * typoGRAPHIC (www.rsub.com/typo/index0.cgi), a site with both
        exellent design and content.

        They offer enough links to continue, depending on your main
        interests (screen, modern, basic, metal...)

        Books:
        -----
        * Erik Spiekerman has written easy to read introductions, e.g.
        "Stop stealing sheep & find out how type works".
        (see amazon link below)

        Especially for fontographer, but also interesting generally:

        * Fontographer: Type by design
        (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN%3D1558284478/dmastypebooksforA/4794-4760211-565765)

        Both of them are in the top ten list of www.typebooks.org, so
        have a look there to see what other typophiles regard as basic
        reading.

        Personal recommendation:
   * otl aicher: typographie. Wonderful, but I have no idea if or
        where an English edition is available.

                Have fun,
                        Gerhard
