The Etymologisches Wörterbuch des Deutschen tells me that the tale about the election of the king of birds first appears in Aristotle's and Plinius' writings. The bird's name
in Latin is regulus "little king" and psittacus (from Greek), in Middle Latin bitriscus and bitrisculus (I don't know what this is etymologically).
